Hi there,
In order to grow your hair long and healthy, you need to start off with healthy hair. So, try to get a nice trim getting rid of as many split ends as possible. Then you are ready to begin.
Start treating your hair with care by washing and conditioning at least once a week. Detangle your hair gently while the conditioner is still in. Deep condition every two weeks.
Use a moisturizing leave-in conditioner and try to practice no-heat or low-heat hair styles like roller sets or braid outs.
Detangle and moisturize your hair every night...especially your ends. Then, pin, roll, or wrap your hair at night and tie on a silk or satin scarf.
Get your hair trimmed regularly (every 2-3 months max) and wear your hair up often. Keeping your hair from coming in contact with with the weather and harsh fabrics will allow you to retain more length.
Your hair will grow. The hard part is retaining length. Do as many of the things I mentioned and you'll notice that you're retaining length. Don't give up. Time will pass no matter what. Might as well get there with the healthy hair that you desire.
